The UK Government plans to phase out all physical immigration documents by the end of 2024, shifting entirely to eVisas. These digital authorizations, linked to an individual's passport, will allow users to access an online portal to verify their UK immigration status, such as for employment checks.
An e-Visa serves as a digital record of a person's UK immigration status, including any relevant conditions, and is linked to their passport. This status can be viewed through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) View and Prove Service. By December 31, 2024, eVisas will replace physical documents like Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs). Those whose immigration status extends beyond this date must set up a UKVI account to access their eVisa. It's important to note that this change is unaffected by recent UK elections.
e-Visa for EEA nationals and other categories:
The introduction of e-Visas has already started for European Economic Area nationals under the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as for some non-visa nationals in specific immigration categories. By the end of 2024, e-Visas will apply to all nationalities and immigration categories, with all BRPs set to expire on December 31, 2024. The UK Government has begun notifying BRP holders via email, instructing them to register for a UKVI account, with a complete rollout expected by summer 2024. Those with BRPs expiring before December 31, 2024, don’t need to apply for an e-Visa immediately but will need to extend their immigration permission when due.
Steps to register for an e-Visa:
Following these steps will ensure a smooth transition to the eVisa system, making it easier to confirm immigration status when necessary.
How to prove your immigration status in the UK with e-Visa?
In the UK, e-Visa holders can prove their immigration status by generating a share code through their UKVI account and providing it along with their date of birth to employers or landlords. Any changes to passport or contact details should be promptly updated in the UKVI account.
If you’ve previously used the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' mobile app for your immigration application, you already have a UKVI account. If unsure about your account status, you can check through the View or Prove Your Immigration Status service or review your immigration confirmation email. More information about e-Visas is available on the UK Government's e-Visa site.
